Wasps v Liverpool. Early on in this season (1983-84) I made the deision to start marketing my work to Fleet Street.. I had no real idea how to go about iot other than to print up a stack of photos on Saturday night and physically bike them around the fleet street picture desks on Sunday morning. I introduced myself to each picture editor left them with my selection of images and went on to the next newspaper.
The first game I did this for was the Richmond v Wasps game the previous week, and no pictures were used. But this week the Telegraph ran with a photo of Richard Cardus brushing off the tackle of Mike Slemen. After that the Telegraph used my work regularly, and within a month every rugby reporting newspaper was using my work, and within three months I was taken on by the Sunday Telegraph as their Saturday Rugby man.
Many of the negs from this game have gone missing (that London agency), but the rest of the story is history.
